A birthday party that's also a Drop In & Decorate® event!
Last weekend, Lucia Watson, a member of our Board of Directors, turned her birthday into a cookies-for-donation party -- a double whammy of fun for the more than 40 people who came to celebrate and decorate on a perfect New England autumn day.
A nearby community center made a perfect venue, with lots of table space, parking, and lovely grounds for walking or sitting near the pond.
The cookie decorating was abetted by live music, snacks, and a cake everyone helped decorate (after all, we already had the icing!).
As we filled tray after tray of beautiful cookies, the guests enjoyed walking around to see the great variety of styles and designs.By the end of the day, we'd decorated 250 large cookies for donation to the Friends of Assisi Food Pantry in Danielson, Connecticut, which serves 275 families in need in Northeast Connecticut every month.
The food pantry requested "family packs" of four cookies, so on the morning after the party, we packed the cookies into quart-size ziploc bags. This is the first time we've used ziploc bags, and they were perfect for what this agency wanted.
We delivered the cookies to Paulette and Jean from the food pantry, who were staffing an information booth at the town fair that morning. As we carried the boxes of cookies across the green, people kept stopping us to ask if the cookies were for sale. When we explained that we were donating the cookies to the food pantry, they smiled.
Cookies make everyone smile.
