For years we've been wanting to go green, or at least to go greener, when it comes to wrapping cookies for donation.
At the same time, we still want our cookies to look like the gifts they are, festively wrapped to bring cheer to each and every recipient.
So, you can imagine how delighted we are to have discovered compostable food-safe cellophane bags from Nashville Wraps. Yes, these biodegradable bags can go from cookie to compost.
Like many "green" products, the bags are a bit more expensive than the ones we've used before (and Nashville Wraps does sell non-compostable bags at a much lower price).
The company kindly gave us a discount on the purchase price (thanks, Harry!), and the Greenville branch of Citizens Bank of Rhode Island stepped in with a donation to cover the remaining cost so we can test these bags for you (thanks, Paul!).
The bags we're testing are item #NHB411, biodegradable and compostable bags. They are "deluxe 1.6 mil Nature Flex Cello bags made from wood cellulose fibers sourced with sustainable forestry principles. Certified biodegradable, compostable and made carbon zero. Meets ASTM D6400, EN13432 standards for CA and other states. Meets FDA requirements for direct food contact."
How green does that sound? And they're the perfect size for our big, beautiful cookies.
Thanks again to Nashville Wraps and to Citizens Bank for working together to help us go green. We'll be using the bags at our flagship event in early December, where we will decorate more than 700 cookies for distribution to several Rhode Island food pantries, domestic violence agencies and a family emergency shelter.
We are grateful beyond measure for the support of these two businesses.
