On October 2, Roger Williams University School of Architecture, Art and Historic Preservation wrapped up a three-day regional conference for the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) by hosting a Drop In & Decorate® event for more than 100 students -- on a Sunday morning! -- to benefit the East Bay Food Pantry. Gregory Laramie, assistant dean, organized the event and shared this report.
Roger Williams University in Bristol, Rhode Island, hosted students from 15 member schools (Maryland, Penn State, CCNY, Pratt, NJIT, NYIT, Drexel, Penn, Umass Amherst, Northeastern, Boston Architectural College, Wentworth, Syracuse, RISD, RWU) for this three-day conference. The students participated in a Design Charrette, listened to a keynote speaker, participated in discussion groups, toured Newport, and enjoyed a Beaux Arts Ball at the Steel Yard, as well as the Drop In & Decorate event on Sunday morning.
We selected Drop In & Decorate as the Sunday morning activity so participants could have fun, be creative, and do good. AIAS has a community service component to membership, and along with the Design Charrette, this event helps the AIAS meet its community service goals.
Our recipient, the East Bay Food Pantry right here in Bristol, Rhode Island, serves more than 900 households representing more than 3,000 individuals (850+ are children). The food pantry is set up grocery store style: clients get a shopping basket and choose what their family needs and likes based on household size and key nutritional guidelines.
Thanks, Greg! Thanks, students! Special thanks to Laura Laramie, who shared the first three photos with us.
