Jo and Christine organized their first Drop In & Decorate® event last month, and sent this great report along with lots of photos:
In Newton, MA, just outside Boston, there is a little cooking school called Create a Cook. The mission and philosophy at Create a Cook is that they teach all ages, from eager three year olds to the most recalcitrant adults, how to cook and how to love cooking. Classes in basic skills like knife handling and food safety are combined with cuisines from around the world. There is something for everyone in the kitchens at Create a Cook.
When owner Jo Horner heard about Drop In & Decorate, she thought that the concept sounded really fun, and that the facility was a perfect fit for staging a Drop In & Decorate® event. There is a talented staff of baking experts and helpers on hand, several ovens in which to bake dozens of cookies, and large tables upon which guests could "drop in" to decorate.
Jo sought out a charity to give the cookies to after they were finished, and picked The Second Step (www.thesecondstep.org) which is a transitional program for families in crisis based in neighboring Newtonville, MA.
Bakers Caitlin and Heather, helpers Maria and Aley were on hand whipping up the cookies and royal icing, and getting the sprinkles and spatulas set up. Special guests Julia Shanks and the team from Drop In & Decorate, headed by Lydia herself, were on hand. At the end of the day, nearly 100 people came in and decorated about 400 cookies.
We can't wait to do this again next year.
How exciting! What a great success for your first time. Many thanks to the bakers, organizers and decorators!
